About Ms. Laura
Laura Koch is a professional, award-winning musician who leads and writes for the Langley-based band, The Kwerks. Her love of music began at a young age as she absorbed the music and lyrics all around her young ears - from Raffi to Simon and Garfunkel to her own parents' hippie-style duet musings, she was plugged into her love of music early, and as she grew, so did her love of both listening to and participating in music.
From early in her life, she dabbled in music, playing around on her family's piano, singing in children's choirs, and learning how to harmonize during her nightly supper-dishes singing sessions with her three sisters. As she grew, she picked up more instruments, but always wielded a hearty disdain for performing, opting to keep her musical moments behind closed doors.
In 2001 she married her husband, Ryan, who loved singing with her, and encouraged her to perform more. She dabbled, but it wasn't until 2015, 14 years, three kids, a dog and a mortgage later, that she and her husband began a journey of defining their life values, and following their deepest passions. Through a series of crazy moves involving quitting a career, sending her homeschooled kids to school, and downsizing from their typical suburban house into community-living, Laura worked up the nerve to dust off her guitar and start writing, and subsequently formed the band, The Kwerks, which in its first four years has gained national exposure through the CBC, radio play, and won Laura an award for "Excellence in Performance by a female artist."
Through both her skillful songwriting, rhythmic and catchy melodies, and the lively banter with her husband during their shows, Laura has entertained thousands of fans both young and old, had them giggling away at her songs, and has gotten them out of their seats, dancing.
Laura's next step was to marry her passions for music and working with children into a new endeavour - Snap-Tunes! Through her work as the Artist in Residence at Langley Fine Arts School, she worked to develop a program that teachers, students and parents can't get enough of, and frankly, neither can she!
